Invented by British designer Lucy Hughes, MarinaTex is a home compostable material designed as an alternative to single-use plastic.
Created as a final year project by Hughes at The University of Sussex, the fully biodegradable film is created from red algae and organic waste from the fishing industry.
Her journey did not start with the problem of plastic. Hughes was looking into the large amount of waste produced from the fish processing industry in the UK yearly.
The development of MarinaTex took over 100 different experiments and is still undergoing research and development.
